Hair growth occurs in four different stages, all of which starts at the root or better known as the hair follicle under the skin. At this level, blood is fed to the hair follicle in order to nourish it. Over many years, each hair will pass through the four stages of growth (Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen). Today we will examine these four stages of hair growth from the beginning of the new follicle until hair loss occurs.

Anagen – The Growing Phase

The Anagen phase of hair growth is better known as the growing phase. This can last between 2 to 7 years. During this phase, the length of the hair will be determined.

Catagen – The Transition Phase

The Catagen phase is also known as the transition phase. During this time, the hair follicle begins to shrink. It then detaches from the dermal papilla. The Catagen phase generally lasts about 10 days.

Telogen – The Resting Phase

About 10 to 15 percent of hair goes through the Telogen phase, better known as the resting phase at one time. It lasts for approximately three months. New hair begins to grow while older hair is resting.

Exogen – New Hair Phase

The Exogen phase is part of the resting phase. This is when older hairs shed and new hair begins to grow. Normal hair loss usually sheds anywhere from 50 to 150 strands daily.

When hair enters the resting phase too early, excessive shedding may occur. This is true with certain types of Telogen Effluvium, a certain type of hair loss. If you are experiencing hair loss, the hair restoration experts at Ultimate Hair Dynamics in San Diego may be able to help you!
